Shortfall in Oct fertiliser output

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Nov. 20

DESPITE repeated assurances on the part of the Government regarding adequate availability of fertilisers during the ensuing rabi season, fertiliser production in the country during October this year has fallen short of the target by around 58 lakh tonnes, according to Government estimates.

The major shortfall is on account of low production of phosphate-based fertilisers. While the targeted output of phosphatic fertilisers was estimated at 415.5 lakh tonnes, the actual production stood at 363.1 lakh tonnes. This was mainly because the private sector phosphate plants were able to produce only 243.8 lakh tonnes as against the 302.3 lakh tonnes targeted for the month.

In the case of nitrogen-based fertilisers, the shortfall was much lesser, at 5.6 lakh tonnes as the total production stood at 963.3 lakh tonnes against the target of 968.9 tonnes.

The Department of Fertiliser has set up a Central control room to ensure seamless movement of fertilisers across the States. To avoid shortages during the peak season, the control room will monitor movement, dispatches and arrival of stocks in different parts of the country.
