New Delhi , Nov 20

MOVING one step closer towards offering 3G services to its subscribers, AirTel, the cellular service of the Bharti Group, has successfully conducted the country's first `Enhanced data rate for global evolution' (EDGE) trials using Ericsson technology offering data rates to deliver the full potential of mobile Internet services.

Making this announcement, Mr Sanjay Nandrajog, CEO and Director - Mobility, North-Central region, Bharti, said that with EDGE, cellular subscribers would not only be "always connected" to the Internet, but also benefit from a potential three-fold increase in data rates over current General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) networks.

EDGE also makes mobile multimedia IP-based applications possible in packet radio services networks. This would let users experience shorter response time of the mobile Internet and enjoy new services such as movie previews, multimedia messages, email and Web infotainment, he said.

``EDGE is the new mantra on global Internet connectivity and will allow us to offer high speed data services approximately three times those of packet radio services. The radio services' peak speed is 115 kbps while that of EDGE is 473 kbps, he added.

An EDGE-enabled handset globally costs about Rs 25,000-30,000. The company is hoping that the prices would come down by the time it launches its EDGE services; that would result in more volumes," he said The benefits of this technology are expected to be made available to subscribers in six months.

AirTel also announced the introduction of international packet radio services roaming with SingTel in Singapore and Globe in the Philippines. The facility shortly is also expected to be extended to customers roaming in the UK, Hong Kong, Australia, the US, Thailand and Sri Lanka.
