Hyderabad , Nov. 20

SM Sehgal Foundation announced a new endowment of $1 million for the International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat) to bolster the latter's crops research. The foundation's latest donation will supplement its earlier donation of an equal amount to the institute last year.

The endowment, which will get matching funds from Icrisat, is specifically intended for research on crops for resource-poor farmers. Part of the new endowment will also be used to conduct research on sustainable management of natural resources in Gurgoan of Haryana, according to an Icrisat press release here on Thursday.

The Icrsat's Director-General, Dr William Dar, stated that the new donation would enable the institute to expand its research on pearl millet and sorghum, which were important to resource poor farmers. The Sehgal Foundation was created for furthering the well being of rural Indian communities. According to its Founder and Chairman, Dr Suri Sehgal, the research of Icrisat and other centres of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research had a tremendous impact on the welfare of farmers throughout the developing world.
