Climate & Weather Kerala: Lull in rainfall continues Our Bureau
THE North-East monsoon extended its lull to three more days ending on November 19, according to the Agromet Advisory issued by the Met Office, Thiruvananthapuram. Only Thiruvananthapuram district reported reasonable rainfall, with "normal" precipitation being recorded during the period. Nine districts Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Idukki, Kollam, Kottayam, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad and Pathanamthitta recorded "scanty" rain while no rain was reported from Kannur, Kasaragod, Thrissur and Wayanad. However, rainfall for the season (October 1 to November 19) was "excess" in Alappuzha, Idukki, Kollam, Kottayam, Thiruvananthapuram and Wayanad; "normal" in Ernakulam, Kannur, Kasaragod, Malappuram, Palakkad, Pathanamthitta and Thrissur; and "deficient" in Kozhikode. Thiruvananthapuram Airport recorded 1 cm of rain on November 19. Mean minimum temperature varied between 22 deg C and 25 deg C during the three-day period in various districts, with Alappuzha recording the lowest (21.9 deg C) on November 17. Mean relative humidity varied between 66 per cent and 83 per cent, mean cloud coverage between 3 oktas and 5 oktas and mean wind speed, 2 kmph and 8 kmph. Forecast valid until November 22 spoke about rain/thundershowers at isolated places while no significant change was indicated for the two subsequent days. State and stage of crops: First weeding and top dressing were on in the Mundakan paddy fields. The crop had reached the early tillering stage in these fields, where sowing was done relatively late. Intercultural operations and second top dressing of fertilisers were progressing in coconut, arecanut, cashew, rubber and pepper. Harvesting and processing of arecanut were apace, as was tapping in rubber. Tapioca, banana and seasonal vegetables were in different stages of growth. Plant protection measures were being taken in coconut (rhinoceros beetle and red palm weevil), paddy (stem roller and leaf roller), cashew (tea mosquito) and vegetables (shoot and fruit borers, mites and aphids). Agricultural advisory: First weeding and top dressing can continue in paddy. Continued alert against leaf roller and stem borer need to be mounted in paddy fields. In case of infestation, spraying Phosphamidon at 0.5 ml/litre of water is recommended. In coconut, rhinoceros beetle and red palm weevil can be controlled by pouring Carbaryl (50 per cent wp) in 20 gm/litre of water through the topmost portion of the cavity, after cleaning up the crown. In cashew, tea mosquitoes can be controlled with a round of spraying with Quinalphos at 2 ml/litre of water, to synchronise with the emergence of new flushes. Intercultural operations and top dressing can be practised in banana, tapioca and seasonal vegetables. Staking of young plants can be done in rubber. Fertilise application may also be undertaken.
