Drinking water scheme in Thiruvananthapuram

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Water Resources Minister, Mr T.M. Jacob, has said that the drinking water scheme being implemented with Japanese assistance for Thiruvananthapuram and neighbourhood areas would be completed by year 2006.

The scheme had been designed taking into view the drinking water requirements of the city and its suburbs up to year 2021, an official spokesman quoted the Minister as saying.

The Rs 215.21-crore project, called the Thiruvananthapuram Improvement Scheme, would service the city of Thiruvananthapuram and the immediate neighbourhood of Attipra, Kudappanakkunnu, Kadakampalli, Sreekaryam, Ulloor and Vattiyoorkavu. To be implemented in two phases, the project would ensure drinking water supplies to an estimated 9. 39 lakh people in these areas.

The per-head daily requirement of water has been estimated at 170 litres in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation area and 128 litres in the rural areas. Besides, the project also provides for meeting the requirements of non-domestic and industrial consumers.
