THE electroplating units in the city will have to shift outside the city limits to conform to the Pollution Control Board norms, according to Mr A. Rajendran, Deputy Director, Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI), Karaikudi. A common effluent treatment plant has been planned.
Presiding over a two-day workshop on `Effluents from metal finishing industries - treatment and recovery of valuables', organised by the CECRI, here recently, Mr Rajendran said the technical expertise for the purpose will be provided by the CECRI. A 27-acre site has been identified at Karisalkulam in the Sivagana district for setting up the electroplating industrial park. The electroplating waste polluted the atmosphere and could cause diseases such as cancer. The effluents contain cyanide, nickel, zinc, copper and iron. In order to provide occupational and environmental safety, production units, treatment of effluents and recovery of metals and waste need to be properly designed, he stressed.
