`Activate TN farmers body'
Our Correspondent
MADURAI: The State Government should activate the Tamil Nadu Farm Workers Welfare Board at the earliest, lest an agitation be launched for the purpose, the Tamil Manila Vivasaya Thozhilalar Sangam has threatened.
At a two-day State conference of the sangam, held recently at Srivilliputhur near here, it was resolved to fight independently and also joining with like-minded organisations for the resurrection of the welfare board from the neglect of the State Government.
Following a series of agitations, the board was formed in November 1999. More than seven lakh farm hands have registered themselves with the board by paying Rs 100 each, on the promise to provide the members with multifarious benefits that included maternity assistance, educational assistance, compensation to the family on the death of a member, etc.
Despite raising a corpus of Rs 7 crore, the board has not become functional, the resolution said.
By another resolution, the conference resolved that the State Government should implement the 43 recommendations of the Kolappan Committee submitted in 1998 that included the fixing of wages for farm workers.
Other resolutions, passed in the conference, demanded the State Government to supply all essential commodities at subsidised rates through the public distribution system.
