Power Simhadri power plant load factor goes up Our Bureau
COOL PERFORMANCE: The twin cooling towers of Simhadri power plant of the National Thermal Power Corporation near Visakhapatnam. - C.V. Subrahmanyam
Visakhapatnam , Nov. 21 THE 1000-MW Simhadri power plant of the National Thermal Power Corporation near here has achieved the highest plant load factor of 89.6 per cent in the State during the current financial year till now. Among the NTPC plants in the country, it stands at second the highest being 91 per cent achieved by a NTPC plant in Uttar Pradesh. "This is a noteworthy achievement for a new plant and Simhadri is meeting nearly one-sixth of the State's power requirements. During the past six months, hydel generation in the State has suffered due to decreasing water levels in the reservoirs, especially in the Krishna basin, and Simhadri's role has become crucial," said Mr V.K. Reddy, Assistant General Manager (Operation and Maintenance), on Friday. He said the first unit of the plant (500 MW) was synchronised in February 2002 and the second of the same capacity in August 2002 and within six months both units could be stabilised. Usually, it would take one year or so to do that and in the first year of operation, the plant load factor was 85 per cent. It could generate 4,972.25 million units and became eligible for the meritorious productivity award of the Union Government. Replying to a query about the problems faced by the plant during May-June earlier this year and frequent trippings, Mr Reddy said the problem was not with the plant but with the transmission lines of AP Transco. "The AP Transco has addressed the problem and taken some corrective measures to evacuate power uninterruptedly. It will not recur," he said. He said Simhadri was taking all steps to protect environment in the neighbourhood of the plant. "A total of 4.83 lakh trees were raised during the past four years and the target for the current year has been set at one lakh," he said.
