THE Prime Minister of Mauritius, Mr Paul Raymond Berenger, has urged Indian business leaders to make use of the double taxation avoidance treaty between India and Mauritius to do businesses with countries like Madagascar and Mozambique.
Addressing a joint meeting organised by the CII and the FICCI, Mr Berenger said that while Mauritius has double taxation avoidance treaty with India, it also has similar treaty with Madagascar, Mozambique and other African countries.
"Herein lies immense opportunity and potential to work together. Let us look at something bigger, use Mauritius to go in the direction of Africa - especially Madagascar and Mozambique." He added: "Mauritius has built modern institutions in the financial sector. Our financial sector is opaque. Recently, IMF and the World Bank have praised Mauritian efforts for strengthening its financial institutions. In this regard, we will not tolerate any abuse."
Mr Berenger also outlined its strong judiciary, property protection guarantee by Constitution, investment friendliness, establishment of rule of law, unique private and Government partnership, good infrastructure like ports, harbours, telecom facilities, high literacy rate and ongoing reform process in social sector, such as education and training.
He also said that Mauritius enjoys preferential access to the European Union and the US and is strategically positioned for Indian business leaders to tap preferential markets.
