A laser show being held at the Air India building in Mumbai. - - Shashi Ashiwal
Mumbai , Nov. 21 ONE of the most visible landmarks in Mumbai, the Air-India Building, has been chosen as one of four sites for a unique global project that will engage the ordinary citizen in an urban dialogue involving the exchange of text messages that will be projected on to well-known buildings and locations using laser beams. The Helloworld Project is characterised as a media art project conceived by Swiss artist, Johannes Gees. It will go live during the UN summit on the Information Society to be held in Geneva between December 9 and 12. According to Ms Anisha Imhasly, a spokesperson for Helloworld, the aim was to invite the public to an open forum that "on the one hand highlighted the capabilities of IT and, on the other, addressed the issue of the freedom of expression and the digital divide." The exchange of messages is expected to create a highly visible public platform for discussion. The project is seen as a collaborative happening and hopes to take control of public space with the power of words. To join in the message exchange, a participant has to simply SMS his or her message to a dedicated number or enter the same on the official project Web site www.helloworldproject.com. `Message jockeys' would then vet all the messages received, removing anything objectionable. "All racist and sexist messages as well as messages containing any personal or religious insults would be removed," Ms Imhasly assures. She told Business Line that the project has been commissioned by the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, and is meant as a present from Geneva, the host city to the UN summit. The organisers had chosen the Air-India building as it was a recognisable site in a picturesque setting on the Marine Drive. Importantly, its column of offices was visible from most points of the city, she adds. The UN Headquarters building in New York, Geneva's famous Jet d'eau, the tallest water fountain, and the Morro dois Irmaos, a mountain on Rio de Janeiro's Ipanema beach, will be the other sites for projection of the messages. This is the second of a series of text projections by Helloworld; its first project was held in February 2001 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
