`MRPL becomes 3rd largest refinery'

THE Vice-President (Maintenance), Mangalore Refineries and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL), Mr B.C. Shukla, has said that MRPL has become the third largest refinery in the country.

Addressing the delegates at the international workshop on `Recent trends in lubrication engineering', organised by the Department of Mechanical, Industrial and Production Engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), at Manipal on Saturday, he stated that the refinery is processing 9.6 million tonnes of crude oil every year. MRPL has processed 57 types of crude oil till now.

Referring to the topic of the workshop, he stated that 60 per cent mechanical failures in the industry related directly to poor or improper lubrication practices.

Mr Shukla said that MRPL consumed nearly 67,500 litres of lubricants worth Rs 57 lakh per year, and used as many as 24 types of lube oils and greases. As per its analysis, lubrication related failure accounted for 18 per cent of its failures as against the industry standard of 34 per cent.
