Kerala: Transport strike total

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The 12-hour strike observed by the Joint Action Council of transport workers unions in the State was near total and peaceful.

Private buses, autorickshaws, taxis, tempo vans and lorries kept off the roads in response to the call given by the unions including CITU, INTUC, AITUC, BMS and STUC.

The strikers protested the Centre's practice of announcing frequent hikes in the price of petroleum fuels, which, they feared, would put the transport sector into jeopardy. In the process, lives of lakhs of people would be badly affected.

Private vehicles largely plied throughout the State on the day of the strike, but the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) cancelled most of its schedules fearing reprisals from striking workers. In cites such as Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, the KSRTC ventured to operate skeletal services.
