Standards & Benchmarks KRL obtains high safety ranking Our Bureau
Kochi , Jan. 18 KOCHI Refineries Ltd has been graded level seven in the international safety rating system by the independent foundation Det Norske Veritas (DNV). This rating places the organisation among the top few companies and industrial units audited by DNV across the world, Kochi Refineries Ltd said in a statement. The safety audit, comprising of a wide array of factors and components, was completed in October 2003. DNV's rating systems is acknowledged worldwide and is a comprehensive audit of the management's performance and it has 10 levels of certification. The verification is conducted in 20 different areas, with each area having a specified number of points. The total number of points for which an industrial unit or company is rated is 12,000. To attain level seven, KRL had to score a base minimum in 15 different areas, ranging from leadership, communication, accident and incident analysis to security, planned inspections, various levels of maintenance and training. One critical component is `loss control', which is the minimisation of accident losses, such as injuries, illness, property damage, process losses, quality losses and regulatory infringements that can impair the effectiveness of an organisation. In a laudatory note, Mr S. Behuria, Chairman and Managing Director of BPCL as well as Chairman of KRL expressed his happiness on KRL's achievement and conveyed his congratulations on the company's effort in the field of ensuring safety in operations. Such safety evaluation and rating are perceived essential in critical sectors such as shipping, off-shore operations, oil and gas exploration, extraction and processing and in the nuclear field. DNV is an international organisation spread across the globe with 300 offices in 100 countries. It currently audits around 6,000 industrial units worldwide and is recognised as a leading international authority in risk management. KRL is confident that the rating will help it in the immediate future when the company will be executing a new single buoy-mooring project off the Kochi Port waters and also in its capacity expansion programme, which is slated to enhance its capacity to 10 million tonnes per annum. The increased capacity will entail bringing in greater amount of crude in bigger very large crude containers to Kochi, transporting it over newly laid pipelines under pressure and refining this increased volume of crude at the refinery. Better safety systems and security certifications are deemed essential for this process.
