Hyderabad , Jan. 19

IN a proactive step, agricultural scientists, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and Government officials reached out to the rural folk, especially farmers in Ranga Reddy district of Andhra Pradesh, involved them in a brainstorming session to evolve priority areas of development.

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (Crida), Hyderabad, brought together the departments of agriculture, animal husbandry, sericulture, horticulture, Velugu, tribal development and NGOs such as Reeds, Aware, Spoorthy, Scope, Janavikas, etc. in the meeting recently.

The focus was on the development of farmers and landless households in the neighbouring Ranga Reddy district through different activities jointly formulated by the Government, Agriculture Institute and NGOs.

The technologies adopted and the projects initiated could be used as a model for other districts of Andhra Pradesh, explained Dr Y.S. Ramakrishna, Director of Crida. An action plan for the development of Ranga Reddy district would be prepared by the KVK with the support of the concerned Government departments and NGOs.

A system of rice intensification should be made popular as utilisation of water could be reduced to less than 50 per cent in addition to improving productivity by 20-25 per cent was a major suggestion made at the meeting.

The NGOs assured participation in creating awareness and support in education, poverty alleviation and agriculture development.

If the socio-economic conditions of the people in Ranga Reddy district can be improved the migration from rural areas to Hyderabad for employment could be arrested to an extent, the meeting felt.

In addition to farming, non-farming activities such as tailoring, embroidery, preparation of detergents and soaps, making juices, squashes, jams, jelly, papad, leaf plate, cups making, bags and covers etc. could be promoted as rural enterprises, the meeting said.
