Freshwater prawn farming in Chellanam near Kochi. Prawn farming is picking up in the State. There was a spurt in freshwater prawn farming activities from 2000 onwards in various maritime States. During 2002-03, an estimated 30,450 tonnes of freshwater prawns were produced in 34,630 hectares of culture area.
