Outsourcing Manipal group plans foray into facilities management Anjali Prayag
Bangalore , Jan. 20 THE Manipal Education and Medical Group is considering a foray into facilities management and education BPO that will do high-end work, according to its Executive Chairman, Mr D.A. Prasanna. Speaking to Business Line, he said, "We have our strengths in healthcare and education and we want to unlock these values." The company is already working with a Singapore-based company in the area of facility management. "At present, we are only servicing our internal needs. We plan to do outside work in the area soon," revealed Mr Prasanna. According to him, the group already employs people skilled in the area and all it has to do is channelise the skills into a new industry. Education BPO is another area of business that the group may consider entering into in the near future, making it one of the forerunners in the business. "We're waiting for a couple of good orders, once we get them, we'll become fully operational," according to him. Mr Prasanna said that the group with the help of Ernst and Young, is working on simplifying the organisation. "We want to focus on key areas and get out of those businesses that are not our core strengths." He was referring to the company's experiment in the hotels business. The Rs 500-crore group has been in the education, healthcare and services industry since 1953. It has over 50 colleges and 15 hospitals across the country and in several South-East Asian countries. According to Mr Prasanna, the Manipal Education and Medical Group is one among the 25 institutions recognised by the Union Government that can internationalise India in the field of education. "In fact, one out of four doctors in Malaysia, one out of six in Nepal and one out of eight doctors in Sri Lanka is from one of our institutes," he said. Last week, the group launched a 600-seat healthcare BPO in Bangalore. Called Omega Healthcare Management Services, the company plans to offer a full range of services, including total healthcare revenue management, clinical services and clinical staff augmentation and cater to Western healthcare providers, healthcare service vendors and administrators.
