Chennai , Jan. 21

THE Society of Automotive Engineers International hopes to have a good Indian participation at the 2005 edition of its international congress, which will also be the society's centenary anniversary.

The congress, held annually in Detroit, attracts nearly 1,200 companies from the automobile industry. About 1,500 technical papers are also presented at the congress. Nearly a third of the participating companies and the technical papers are from outside the US, Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International officials told a press conference here on Wednesday. The congress attracts over 50,000 visitors.

The SAE last week signed an agreement with the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association and SAE India to help the industry and engineers here.

The SAE International hopes that at least 50 Indian companies, both vehicle manufacturers and component manufacturers, will participate in the 2005 congress, according to its Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, Mr Raymond A. Morris.

He said that companies from China and Taiwan were participating in the congress. And, Indian companies too should take this opportunity to showcase their potential and products.

Dr Jack E. Thompson, SAE International President, said the society was working on developing standards for fuel cells and on using hydrogen as a fuel in automobiles. Issues like how to handle hydrogen as a fuel, its source and safe delivery had to be looked into.
