People Subba Rao, Suman Sahai bag Borlaug award Our Bureau
New Delhi, Feb. 2 RENOWNED soil scientist, Dr I.V. Subba Rao, and sustainable biotechnology advocate, Dr Suman Sahai, have been conferred the Norman E. Borlaug Awards for 2004, instituted by the Murugappa group-controlled Coromandel Fertilisers Ltd. The awards will be presented by the President, Dr A.P.J Abdul Kalam, at a function here on February 5, in which the eminent economist, Prof Jeffrey D. Sachs, will also deliver the 21st Coromandel Lecture on "UN Millennium Development Goals", according to a company release. Dr Subba Rao, who was formerly the Vice-Chancellor of the Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University, has been recognised for "his outstanding contribution in improving the productivity, profitability and sustainability of major farming systems and in the area of soil sciences". Dr Sahai, who was a Professor of Genetics at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, and is currently Convenor of Gene Campaign, a non-governmental organisation, has been selected for his role in "fostering genetic and trade literacy among farmers and the general public", the release added.
