Coir Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Exports of coir products up G.K. Nair
Kochi , Feb. 4 EXPORTS of coir and coir products during April-December of the current fiscal witnessed an uptrend with an increase of over Rs 36 crore, taking total exports to Rs 289 crore from Rs 252.14 crore during the same period last year. The shift towards natural products especially coir in the global market has pushed up exports this year. Given this trend, total exports are expected to touch Rs 400 crore, an senior Coir Board source told Business Line. He said the response from participants at the recently-concluded Domotex International Trade Fair at Hanover, Germany, were indications that more exports would take place during the last quarter of the current fiscal. Demand for coir mats, coir yarn, mattings, coir pith and geo-textiles had shown a positive trend. The total exports during April-December 2003 stood at 70,685 tonne, valued at Rs 288.99 crore as against 59,554 tonnes worth Rs 252.14 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 19 per cent in volume and 15 per cent in value, he said. There had been a substantial increase in coir mats exports to 34,799 tonnes valued at Rs 207.56 crore from 28,451 tonnes worth Rs 175.64 crore in April-December 2002. Coir yarn exports went up to 8,965 tonnes valued at Rs 24.14 crore from 7,621 tonnes valued at Rs 19.76 crore. Exports of coir pith, hitherto considered as a waste material, had risen to 18,751 tonnes valued at Rs 13.30 crore from 15,173 tonnes valued at Rs 11.31 crore. Demand for geo-textiles and coir mattings had also shown an increase, he said. However, exports of rugs and carpets, coir rope, curled coir and rubberised coir did not pick up. The decline in export of rubberised coir, he said, was because of the high freight involved. As a result, many countries import the raw materials in bulk and manufacture this product abroad so as to save on high shipping cost.
