Action plan to expand world coffee market

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Feb. 4

AN action plan adopted last September to increase coffee consumption worldwide would be implemented by members, the International Coffee Organisation (ICO) decided in its meeting in London last week.

The plan focuses on market development with activities tailored to the geographical areas of coffee producing countries, emerging markets such as Russia and China, and traditional markets. In addition, the market would benefit from the expansion of membership of the ICO following the likely entry of Russia, the US and the 10 countries scheduled to join the European Union in May 2004, ICO members noted.

A global code for the sustainable growing, post-harvest processing, and trading of mainstream green coffee is likely to be developed by the end of the year.
