Thiruvananthapuram , Feb. 4

A `tourist facilitation centre' built by the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) at Kallar in Thiruvananthapuram was inaugurated by the Tourism and Fisheries Minister, Mr K.V. Thomas, on Tuesday. The State's Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Mr G. Karthikeyan, presided over the gathering.

The facility, built at a cost of Rs 20 lakh, is targeted at people visiting Kallar on their way to the nearby Ponmudi hill resort, said Mr G. Santhamohan, Secretary, DTPC. Though constructed and owned by the DTPC, the centre has been leased to an entrepreneur, he added.

Located on the banks of the Kallar river, the centre has a cafeteria, a convenience store and toilets. Besides, it also has a telephone booth and an outlet that sells forest produce such as spices. Other facilities available at the centre include a rooftop party area and parking for 50-odd cars. Visitors to the Meenmutty waterfalls, which is approximately two kilometres away, can also park their vehicles at the centre.
