Pvt sector gaining importance in defence production

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Feb. 6

DURING the year 2002-03, Defence PSUs outsourced to the extent of more than 30 per cent whereas in case of Ordnance factories, the figure was at about 80 per cent thus providing an indication of the growing importance of the private sector in defence production.

This was stated by Mr Chaman Lal Gupta, Minister of State for Defence, Government of India, while speaking at the India Defence Industry Summit organised on the occasion Defexpo 2004.

Mr Gupta said that a huge amount was spent by the Government on import of defence equipment and components due to the absence of appropriate domestic capabilities.

Mr Gupta added that the Government was making all efforts to attract and facilitate FDI and investments by NRIs and overseas corporate bodies.
