Events President calls for `knowledge management grid' Our Bureau
New Delhi , Feb. 24 THE President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, on Tuesday called upon the agencies involved with digitisation of data to set up a knowledge management grid that would be available to people through different Indian languages. The existing archives of papers have many shortcomings. Many works still in existence today are rare and only accessible to a small population of scholars and collectors at specific geographical locations. Digital technology can make them permanently available to billions of people across the world, he said. The country needs a national policy on digital library systems, Dr Kalam said while inaugurating the international conference on digital libraries organised by the Department of Culture and The Energy and Research Institute (TERI) here. He suggested setting up of a multi-disciplinary task force for working out the draft policy document. "The policy should take into account the dynamics of the Web services technology and keep provision of on-line improvement and variation in future digital library systems," the President said. Pointing out that the digitisation initiative had picked up momentum in the country, Dr Kalam said this was the time when "we have to make consistent national policies and procedures which would lead to effective management and control of data, leading to enhancement of the national knowledge base." The policy makers should take into account the standardisation requirements, inter-operability, copyright issues, classification of documents and selection and use of number of library information systems available with various organisations in the country in different standards, he added.
