Bleak scenario

A child trying to quench thirst by taking water from a pit on the dry riverbed of the Bharathapuzha, the second largest river in Kerala. As a result of uncontrolled sand-mining and deforestation in its catchment area, Bharathapuzha, once a perennial river, now dries up during summer months. Around 23 lakh people in 103 panchayats in the State depend on this river for water, for drinking as well as irrigation. This year, crops have been damaged in thousands of acres along the river because of shortage of water.
