Indian vendors find Cannes meet rewarding — Multimedia, messaging solutions and 3G tools draw keen enquiries

Bangalore , March 7

GLOBAL handset manufacturers are seen increasingly interested in the wireless technology developed by Indian vendors.

The interest has more than doubled over the last one year with a sharp rise in enquiries and more deals being signed, according to Indian vendors who showcased their technologies at the recently held 3GSM World Congress at Cannes.

Companies such as Sasken Communication Technologies Ltd, Hughes Software Systems Ltd (HSS) and Jataayu Software Pvt Ltd, among others, which showcased their solutions at the 3GSM World Congress, said the response from the terminal device manufacturers was `good' and they could generate sufficient leads.

These companies also used the event as a platform to announce some of the recent deals they signed.

"Compared to the previous event, we had double the number of people, mainly the handset manufacturers, system integrators and network equipment companies, visiting us at the event," said Mr Manoj Damodar, head (branding and communications), Sasken.

"We have had active discussions with about 500 companies during the event," he said, adding that the interest was more towards multimedia and messaging solutions.

Sasken received a good number of enquires for its Strawberra range of multimedia solutions at the event, he said.

Sasken, which has already licensed its Strawberra range of solutions to NEC of Japan, had on display the GPRS and 3G handsets developed by the latter incorporating its IP at the event.

"The NEC 616 mobile handsets recently launched in the 3G network services in Europe, Asia and Australia have the multimedia IP from Sasken," he said. According to Mr Ajay Gupta, Assistant Vice-President (business development), HSS, the overall interest was more towards 3G as the technology was more likely to gain momentum in the latter part of 2004.

HSS recently announced a deal with Kineto Wireless, which is incorporating HSS' GPRS Stack in its INC-5501, a key component behind its mobile over wireless LAN solution.

"The event turned out to be reasonably good for Indian vendors this year as compared to the previous one," said Mr Raj Kesarimall, Director (marketing), Jataayu Software.

The company announced a deal with UbiNetics Ltd, where in the latter would be integrating Jataayu's WAP 2.0 browser, WAP Stack and MMS client on its GSM/GPRS Platform.

Several handset makers who do not have a direct presence in India are seen increasingly interested in the local technologies than such peer groups that operate through their captive units in the country.

Companies such as Nokia, Motorola, LG, Samsung, Kyocera, AT&T among others have already set up captive software units in India.
