Research & Development `India emerging as R&D hub' Our Bureau
Hyderabad , March 8 "INDIA has emerged as the R&D hub for the world and this is reflected from about 1000 patents filed by the MNCs based here. These MNCs continue to expand their India operations and this can only get better by the day," Dr Vijay P. Bhatkar, Chairman of Dishnet DSL Ltd and Head of ETH Research Lab, said. "The global ICT industry is estimated to be about $3 trillion and India has barely a minuscule pie of this opportunity. Given right policy directions, we could possibly grow this sector to $100 billion in exports by about 2010 and march on to $1 trillion mark by 2020," Dr Bhatkar said. "There is a tremendous opportunity for the large Indian talent pool and we could well and truly outpace the Chinese hardware sector," he explained. Speaking as a chief guest at the 14th annual day celebrations at Centre for Materials for Electronic Technology, Dr Bhatkar, associated with India's supercomputer development, said it is heartening to see the Indian IT services industry growing from Rs 100 crore about two decades ago to nearly $20 billion industry. The best part of this growth has been driven not by good policies but by the industry itself. In such a short span, Indian has emerged the R&D hub for the world where the likes of IBM, Cisco, Intel Analog Devices, have created significant presence in the country. For instance, in less than a decade, the Indian automobile sector has grown significantly and is gradually emerging as a hub for parts where the exports are set to touch $1 billion mark. Dr V.S. Arunachalam, a Materials Science Expert, said new materials have emerged as necessary ingredients and the growth of this discipline hinges on our ability to discover, invent and innovate materials to meet the human needs.
