AP move to stabilise tomato price

Our Bureau

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Government has stepped in to check the falling tomato prices in Chittoor district. Reacting to newspaper reports that tomatoes were being sold below one rupee a kilogram in Chittoor district, the Government decided to purchase tomatoes if the rates fell below Rs 1.50 a kg.

In a statement here today, Mr D.S. Murthy, Commissioner and Director of Marketing, said that the intervention was ordered following a review by the Chief Secretary, Mr Mohan Kanda. "Funds have been placed at the disposal of joint collectors of all districts to purchase tomatoes, if the rates fall below Rs 1.50 a kg," he said.

He said bulk users such as Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam, hostels and `choultries' would be tapped, if need be.
