Sugar industry in AP sets up ethanol units

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , March 9

FOLLOWING the Union Government's decision to sell motor spirit containing 5 per cent of ethanol, sugar industries in Andhra Pradesh have started setting up ethanol producing units.

According to the President of the Andhra Pradesh Distillers Association, Mr A.D.L. Prasad, big industries such as KCP Sugars, Jeypore Sugars and Andhra Sugars, have already started ethanol units, while two more industries, Sri Sarvaraya Sugars and GMR Technologies, are in the process of setting up such units.

Another two to three industries are likely to go into ethanol production within a year.

In a release here on Tuesday, Mr Prasad stated that the Government's decision to mix ethanol with motor spirit would help the sugar industry, which was suffering on account of uneconomical market prices.

He also emphasised that with the latest technological developments manufacture of ethanol would not lead to any environmental pollution, as most of the effluent produced would be converted into bio-earth and biogas.
