Human Resources One lakh new IT jobs coming up in Chennai Our Bureau
Chennai , March 11 CLOSE to one lakh new information technology jobs will be created in three to four years in and around Chennai. This follows the setting up of new development centres by major IT players, including Infosys, Wipro and Tata Consultancy Services, said Mr Vivek Harinarain, Tamil Nadu IT Secretary. Talking to newspersons on the sidelines of a seminar on business process outsourcing (BPO) here, Mr Harinarain said Infosys and Wipro plan to create 20,000-25,000 jobs in their new centres. Similarly, TCS plans to employ more than 10,000 people in the near future in Chennai. Cognizant Technology Solutions has set up a large development centre on the outskirts of Chennai, which can accommodate over 3,000 employees. Similarly, Verizon has built a new facility in the city and has about 800 employees in it, he said. Other large firms would soon follow, he added. In the last couple of weeks about eight new companies have set up their presence in the city, he said. Going by the expansion plans of various IT players, Chennai could overtake Bangalore as the largest revenue earner from IT in the country, he added. Infosys is constructing its new development centre on 130 acres at the Mahindra Industrial Park at an estimated cost of Rs 1,400 crore while Wipro is building a new centre on 80 acres at a cost of Rs 1,100 crore. The Tamil Nadu Government has allotted about 80 acres of land to Wipro. The land is adjacent to Wirpo's existing facility on the Old Mahabalipuram Road, the IT corridor. TCS is also building a new campus in the IT corridor. With IT and ITES (IT-enabled services)/BPO sectors well established in and around Chennai, the next sector that has an enormous potential for investment is hardware. The Chennai and Ennore ports give Chennai an added advantage over other cities in the IT hardware sector. The ports can provide quick turnaround, which would help the IT hardware players, he said. Out of the projected Rs 8,000-crore revenue from IT sector in Tamil Nadu for 2003-04, the IT hardware would contribute about Rs 1,000 crore, he added.
