Asianet yanks Ten Sports; cricket buffs in a tizzy

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram , March 12

WITH the first one-day match between India and Pakistan less than 24 hours away, it is proving to be an anxious wait for cricket buffs in Kerala as the State's largest cable operator Asianet Satellite Communications Ltd suspended telecast of Ten Sports from March 11.

According to cable industry sources, the decision to yank Ten Sports off the Asianet network was taken in light of certain commercial issues. "The rates charged by the channel for telecasting the cricket series are too high," one official said.

Meanwhile, discussions are believed to be on between the cable operator and the broadcaster, say industry sources. The outcome of these discussions, however, remains uncertain. The State's cable industry is also awaiting the outcome of talks between the broadcaster and Prasar Bharati on the terrestrial telecast rights of the cricket series.
