Action plan for water supply in Thiruvananthapuram dist

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A meeting of the people's representatives here chaired by the Food and Civil Supplies Minister, Mr G. Karthikeyan, has chalked out an action plan for ensuring supply of drinking water on a war-footing in Thiruvananthapuram district.

Wells would be cleaned up and deepened, and ponds and water tanks maintained properly. Wherever possible, check dams would be constructed, supply lines extended, tube-wells sunk, an official spokesman said while elaborating on the decisions arrived at the meeting. Expediting work on drinking water supply projects and deployment of water tankers are the main components of the action plan.

According to Mr Karthikeyan, funds would not be a constraint for maintaining the supply lines in the worst affected areas. Each taluk would be allotted 20 water tankers. Officials in charge have been directed to take orders from the grama panchayat presidents.

A sum of Rs 81 lakh has been sanctioned to provide relief to the farmers. Standing crop over an estimated 2,870 hectares has already been lost due to the drought. The State Government has decided to give out Rs 1,500 per hectare as relief to each farmer. In addition, assistance would be given to buy seeds and fertiliser.
