ASSESSMENT of quality attributes of both raw material and finished products has assumed increased significance in the fast globalising business world.
Textiles, in particular, are a unique class of materials possessing high in-built variability as they are composed mainly of natural fibres originating from biological systems that are subject to the vagaries of weather.
It is therefore necessary to have standardised test methods and analytical equipment in order to ensure uniformity in quality evaluation by various analytical laboratories, according to Mr D.S. Tewari, Director of the New Delhi-based National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL).
Speaking at the workshop on "Uncertainty measurement for textiles testing laboratories" organised by Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (CIRCOT) and the Indian Fibre Society (IFS) here today, Mr Tewari asserted that test results in one place should be the same in another place if the material is tested under identical conditions.
"For this purpose, laboratories must strictly abide by prescriptions relating to calibration of equipment and technical qualification of personnel," he remarked.
