A PROPOSAL in the Central Government's labour reforms plan that transfers some powers from the judiciary to the bureaucracy is a retrograde step, according to Mr R.K Somany, Chairman & Managing Director, Hindustan Sanitaryware.

The proposal's aim was to offset delays in solving problems. However, Mr Somany said that the move was not the best way to take labour reforms forward.

Mr Somany, who was here to deliver the keynote address at a meeting organised by the Employers' Federation of Southern India, said that labour reforms were essential to generate more employment in India.

A step in the right direction would be to simplify labour laws and remove their restrictive provisions, he added.
