Mumbai to host global sugar summit

Our Bureau

Mumbai , March 12

SUGAR Summit 2004, an international seminar on the sugar industry and trade, will be held during March 19-20 in Mumbai. Promoted by Tefla's Conferences and Events, the meeting is expected to provide a neutral platform to industry stakeholders at a time when the country's sugar sector has been facing one of its most challenging periods.

In India, the world's second-largest producer of sugar, no stakeholder, including cane growers, sugar mills, consumers and financial institutions, is happy. The industry is struggling for its survival even as controls continue to stymie growth.

Experts would share their insights into the issues impacting the sugar sector, both domestic and global. Presentations by experts from India and abroad would cover industry and trade-related issues, including origin presentations, price outlook, futures trading, export prospects and related issues.

A large number of participants, including policymakers from Central and state governments, reputed sugar mills in the private and cooperative sectors, multinational trading houses, financial institutions, service providers and many more, are expected to assemble, providing an excellent networking opportunity, according to Mr Kailash Singh, Managing Director of Tefla's.

Sugar Summit 2004 would showcase the best resources of the country's sugar sector. The event is supported by many leading organisations such as the Indian Sugar Mills Association, the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Mills Ltd, the Indian Sugar and General Industry Export Import Corporation Ltd, the Maharashtra Rajya Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana Sangh and the Indian Merchant's Chamber, he added.
