Software Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Hyderabad software exports to cross $1 b V. Rishi Kumar
Hyderabad , March 31 SOFTWARE exports from Hyderabad are set to cross the $1-billion (Rs 4,500-crore) mark during the financial year 2003-'04, an increase of more than 20 per cent over last year. According to the Director of the Software Technology Parks of India, Hyderabad, Col. M. Vijay Kumar, and industry sources, including the Hyderabad Software Exporters Association, this is a significant milestone for the State and the city considering the challenging environment over the last three-four years. Col. Vijay Kumar recently told Business Line that given the performance of the sector over the last three quarters and the significant billing to come during the last quarter, Hyderabad was poised to cross the $1-billion mark in overall exports. As opposed to a CAGR (compounded annual growth rate) of over 100 per cent for over eight years from 1994-'95, the overall export growth from Hyderabad slid to 81 per cent in the year 2000-'01, and thereafter to 42 per cent in 2001-'02 and to 26 per cent in 2002-'03, even though this was slightly higher than the national average. Interestingly, exports from the IT-enabled services have contributed significantly over the last two years. Reflecting a growth rate of about 26 per cent during 2002-'03, software exports, including contribution from the ITES segment, resulted in exports of Rs 3,668 crore, wherein Satyam Computer accounted for Rs 462.46 crore and Wipro for Rs 448.68 crore. ITES exports increased by 79.26 per cent during 2002-'03. During the year, the State attracted leading ITES firms, such as Amex and C3i. Within two-three years, the ITES segment has accounted for about 39.16 per cent of overall exports from Hyderabad, and there are indications that this segment could contribute much more this year, with several other players, including HSBC Dataprocessing, Nipuna and GE, expanding their operations. Manpower strength, which stood at about 64,000 as on March 31, 2002, including technical staff of about 58,000 and 6,000 non-technical ones, increased to 71,445 as on March 31, 2003. With hectic pace of recruitment in all major companies, such as including Satyam, Wipro, Infosys and several MNCs including HSBC and GE etc., projections indicate that staff strength this could well touch the one-lakh mark this year. However, the contribution from hardware was about Rs 15 crore, with Wipro ePeripherals Ltd, TeamAsia, Mackel and Visiontek Telesystems being the main players.
