Education `Final touches to IIM-C resolution on fee cut on' Our Bureau
Kolkata , April 3 THE Chairman of Board of Governors of IIM-Calcutta, Mr Y.C. Deveshwar, said here that he was giving final touches to a resolution which would address the contentious issue of fee reduction sought by the Union Human Resource Development Ministry. The governing board of IIM-C, one of the oldest management schools in the country, would take up the resolution at a meeting on Wednesday, a day before Supreme Court takes a view on the subject. Earlier, the IIM-C board vested in the Chairman, Mr Deveshwar, the power to decide on the vexed issue of fee cut. Even though the board met today before the IIM-C 39th annual convocation, according to Mr Deveshwar, it did not discuss the matter. Talking to Business Line, Mr Deveshwar said that he was confident the issue would be resolved amicably and within a short span of time. In case of private management schools, the fee and academic freedom were not the issue. IIMs being public institutions, role of corporates had so far been limited, he indicated. The ITC Chairman felt that in public business schools, corporates are a major stakeholder along with the Government. "The corporate sponsorships are not insignificant in IIMs; more over IIMs look forward to the corporate world for placements. The relationship between the business world and management schools is one of partnership." According to a reliable source, Mr Deveshwar, Mr N.R. Naryana Murthy, Chairman of the governing council of IIM-Ahmedabad and Mr S.M. Dutta, Chairman of IIM-Bangalore, were in touch with each other and also with the Ministry to find an early solution to the problem of fee cut and academic freedom. Meanwhile, Prof Shekhar Chaudhuri, Director of IIM-C, in his statement at the convocation, identified academic freedom as one of the core institutional values to be upheld by the institute. The overall mission statement said IIM-C "is to develop innovative and ethical future leaders capable of managing change and transformation in a globally competitive environment and to theory and practice of management."
