Bangalore , April 23 ANY quiz isn't over until the final question is asked. Cipher, a national finalist in last year's Business Line Quiz, justifying this cricket-terminology-inspired `adage', won today's edition off the last question. The leader for many rounds till then, i-flex Technologies, missed a couple of rebounds and a `direct' one, and allowed Cipher, represented by Mitesh Agarwal and Ajay Kasargod, to not only fill the deficit of 15 points but score five more to end a clear number one. Some of the final round answers of Cipher were real blinders. The final burst of answers started with this question: Who has named his consultancy company the Z Group? `Sergio Zyman,' answered Cipher, after the question rebounded across the table. Laurin and Klement! What of those? They are brands of Skoda, which the winner clinched too. The last question of the quiz literally `sunk' i-flex. Quite appropriately, the question was: `What or which incident, according to David Sarnoff, was a turning point in his career, as well as that of the radio medium?' The answer: The sinking of the Titanic, about which Sarnoff broadcast to the world! However, Cipher and i-flex, the latter represented by K. Prasanna Kumar and U. Damodharan, have by virtue of gaining the top two slots will participate in the grand finale in Chennai on May 7. Earlier, the tenth edition of the Business Line Quiz 2004, presented by Union Bank of India, kicked off its first leg in Bangalore with the prelims, in which over 40 teams participated. Six teams - M. S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Pidilite, NITIE from Mumbai, Rave publishers, along with i-flex and Cipher - got into the finals. Quiz master Mr Suresh Kumar, who dished out a mix of `quizzing classics,' questions on jargon, video clips and slides, was generous with presenting the goodies - T-shirts, pens and gift packages - to not only the correct audience answers but also the more creative ones. Of course, to extend the usage of cricket terminology further, the excitement on the `ground' was created by a boisterous audience, which was ready with witty rejoinders! The full form of a magazine whose acronym is TFK is `Tinkle for Kids,' one from the audience roared. Mostly right, the answer being `Time for Kids.' The most creative of the answers was reserved for a round on jargons. Sample this: Intravenous marketing, according to a team, is when a marketer tries to get inside the skin of the consumer by repeatedly hard selling his product. Great answer, but not right! It refers to a situation where the marketer has the consent of the buyer to make a decision on his behalf. The flavours of the season - cricket and politics - too featured. Some of which were: In which corporate organisation does Virender Sehwag work? (ONGC). Of which product is Mysore Paints and Varnishes the sole producer? (Election ink) Mr K. Venugopal, Executive Editor, The Hindu Business Line, presented the awards to the winners. The first leg over, the BL quiz bandwagon now moves to Hyderabad, with the city prelims and finals slated for April 30. The final city competition will be held in Chennai on May 7, and on the same day the grand finale will take place.
