RIL plans to double polyester capacity

Our Bureau

Mumbai , April 26

RELIANCE Industries Ltd (RIL) plans to double its polyester manufacturing capacity to 11 lakh tonnes per annum from the current capacity of 5.5 lakh tonnes.

According to a source, the company would be adding fresh capacity of 2.3 lakh tonnes of fibre and 3.2 tonnes of yarn per annum at its Hazira and Patalganga plants.

Part of the new capacity will be created this fiscal and the rest in the next, the source added.

During the previous fiscal, the company had expanded the yarn capacity by 50,000 tonnes and fibre by 40,000 tonnes. In 2003-04, RIL's total polyester production increased by five per cent to 8.5 lakh tonnes.

The fresh capacities are expected to be commissioned within the next 9-15 months.

Taking into account the capacities of its strategic partners, Reliance will now control a production capability of 1.5 million per annum, the source said.
