World tea export slips by 25 mkg

GLOBAL tea export trade declined by 25 million kg (mkg)in 2003 over the previous year.

According to the information received from various exporting countries, total exports in 2003 dipped to 1,191 mkg from 1216 mkg in 2002.

The largest fall of 28 mkg occurred in India where the exports declined to 173 mkg from 201 mkg.

Indonesia (-9.5 mkg), Kenya (-3.8), Tanzania (-1.3), Zimbabwe (-1.2) and Bangladesh (-1.1) also posted a fall in exports. But, Sri Lanka shipped 6.5 mkg more than the previous year to reach 298.3 mkg - the largest export from any country in the year.

China also performed well with an additional 8.3 mkg to reach 237.5 mkg - the third largest exporter. Kenya came second with 268.8 mkg. India ranked fourth.

Uganda (+ 2.5 mkg), Malawi (+2.2) and Argentina (+0.3) also posted an increase in their tea exports.

2004 has begun with an encouraging note. The shipments have increased by 7.1 mkg in January over the same month last year. India's exports rose 3.6 mkg to reach 13.9 mkg, while those of Sri Lanka, 3.5 mkg to reach 24.6 mkg.
