Airlines Cargo: BA, Lufthansa hike fuel surcharge
The increases, according to the airlines sources, have been necessitated by the continued rise in fuel prices. For BAWC, the fuel surcharge increase will be to British pound 0.12 per kilo of actual freight while for LC it will be to euro 0.20/kg or local equivalent. The revised rates for LC will be in force from May 10 and for BAWC from May 13. LC in a statement stated that despite the increase in fuel surcharge it would still be required to shoulder high financial risks caused by volatile crude prices. According to BAWC, the fuel index, developed by it to provide customers with more information about the calculation of fuel surcharges, has exceeded the level four threshold for two consecutive weeks. The index, which is updated on a weekly basis, is based on the average price of aviation fuel in four key spot markets, namely, North West Europe, Singapore, Los Angeles and the US Gulf. Fuel expenses represent one of the single highest cost items for the airlines.
