The Hindu Business Line : Internet kiosks planned in 539 Tiruvallur panchayats

At least two banks — Indian Bank and State Bank of India — have offered assistance to make this possible, according to Mr V. Varadarajan, Managing Partner of the company, Minvalai, a franchisee of n-Logue Communications (P) Ltd.

The kiosks themselves will be put up by local entrepreneurs. It would cost about Rs 60,000 to put up one kiosk. There is 50 per cent subsidy from the Government if the kiosk is put up by a self-help group. Bank loans are available for funding the other half of the requirement. Minvalai will provide the hardware, software and training support, and do the hand-holding for the entrepreneur through his business.

Villagers can pay and use the Internet. Typical uses are sending and receiving e-mails, telemedicine, browsing for job opportunities and video games.

The technology for making available bandwidth to villages through the `wireless in local loop' route has been developed by n-Logue Communications, a company formed by a group of professors of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. Franchisees (such as Minvalai) put up towers and relay towers to pick up the bandwidth from the BSNL fibre optic backbone and distribute it via wireless to the villages.
