Telecommunications Tata Tele to launch operations in Bengal by year-end Our Bureau
Kolkata , May 7 TATA Teleservices has firmed up plans to launch telecom operations in West Bengal by the year-end under the Indicom brand. This was stated by Mr Kishor Chaukar, Managing Director of Tata Industries Ltd, during an interface with members of the Confederation of India Industry, Eastern Region (CII ER). Earlier, delivering the theme address at a seminar on `Telecom East, Stimulating Growth', organised here today by CII ER, Mr Chaukar, said CII was in favour of ushering in Internet telephony provided, however, there was a level-playing field for everybody. He dwelt at length on the growing scope in the telecom sector in the country and said that the telecom revolution was a major facilitator of businesses all round. In the days ahead, telecommunications would be the "path to progress and the vehicle to prosperity", he said. Speaking on the occasion, Dr D.P.S. Seth, Member of Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), said a target of 100 million mobile phones has been set by 2005. He stressed upon the need for increased spectrum availability in view of the existing demand. Dr Seth, presenting a strong case for "rapid and aggressive deployment of broadband", said TRAI had recently submitted its recommendations on broadband to the Government. In his welcome address, the new Chairman of CII, ER, Mr B. Muthuraman, said with Kolkata's increasing prominence as a destination for IT and ITES companies, the telecom sector in the East was well poised to emerge as one of the fastest growing industries.
