Regional trade

This refers to "Asian Highway to put regional trade in top gear" (Business Line, May 8). Though the idea of pan-Asian highway system conceived as early as 1959, it is unfortunate that it took nearly half-a-century to given a practical shape to it. However, it is hoped that the Asian Highway will booster the inter- and intra-regional trade in Asia. In fact, it may also help to form an economic union in Asia in line with the European Union.

AH-1, the longest in the Asian Highway network and passing through India and Pakistan, is expected to iron out the differences between the two countries and will promote trade and cooperation.

C. Ramesh,

Keeramangalam(TN)
