Letters Knowledge economy
The Indian Merchants Chamber, Mumbai is initiating steps to make Mumbai a `knowledge city', with modern and social infrastructure (Business Line, May 7). Closely following the McKenzie report, which attempts to take a `holistic view' of the entire needs of Mumbai in transport, health and education sectors, this is welcome. There is need to spell out the constituents of the `modern' and `social' infrastructure. Are they to be confined to malls and multiplexes and entertainment centres? Knowledge economy presupposes the creation of facilities for dissemination of information. Why not have a library and a book shop at every mall and multiplex? The proposed think-tank of administrators, prominent citizens and academicians would be doing a great service to the human resources development if they consider how best the government, public and private sector organisations can help in the setting up of libraries in various localities to ensure that the benefits of the knowledge economy is available to all citizens.
