Bangalore , May 10 INTEL announced on Monday that it was shipping three new Pentium M processors, boosting the performance of the Intel Centrino mobile technology. The new chips - 735, 745 and 755 - formerly codenamed Dothan, are aimed at the mobile notebook market in an effort to accelerate the growing trend of wireless Internet access via laptop PCs. The Pentium M processors are Intel's first mobile processors built with 90 nanometre manufacturing technology, which enables better performance at the same power consumptions levels, said Mr Amar Babu, Director of Sales and Marketing, Intel Technology India. "The Centrino technology will extend the `unwired' lifestyle beyond the enterprise to consumers at home and on the road." Barely a year after the launch of the platform, Intel has announced that more than 150 models of notebook PCs are now equipped with Centrino technology globally. In India too, the SMB and small office home office segments were increasingly adopting laptops and would be a part of Intel's target customer group, Mr Babu said. He added that IDC had forecast a 15 per cent growth in laptop sales in India year-on-year. "Last year we witnessed 140 per cent growth, albeit over a small base. We expect to do better this year." Intel is also in talks with telecom service providers, access point providers, and partners to increase the spread of wireless access technologies at the consumer interface levels, he added. The new chips have higher clock speeds (from 1.7 GHz to 2 GHz) and nearly double the data storage - 2MB L2 cache - because of the smaller transistors and stretched strained silicon technology that is part of Intel's new manufacturing and design innovations, said Mr Jayant Murty, Director (Marketing), South Asia. The Intel Pentium M processor will be featured in the Intel Centrino mobile technology-based systems that are being introduced. Intel is also shipping boxed versions of the new Pentium processors to Intel authorised distributors for system integrators worldwide.
