Visakhapatnam , May 24

VISAKHAPATNAM is a rapidly growing city in Andhra Pradesh, as it has the requisite resources and the right kind of environment to move into fast lane, Mr Richard D. Haynes, Consul-General of the US in Chennai, has said.

Mr Haynes, on a short visit to the city, met the Mayor, Ms Rajana Ramani, here on Monday morning and later said the US was keen on promoting agro-processing units in States such as Andhra Pradesh and the local entrepreneurs should make use of the opportunity.

He said it would be easier to attract investment into such areas. A cost-effective technology for treatment of wastewater and recycling which is available in the US, would also be of great relevance to States such as Andhra Pradesh, he said. "Foreign direct investment from my country will be easier in such fields," he said and wanted Indian entrepreneurs to explore areas where the US techniques could be gainfully used.

"The US is also interested in helping civic bodies in India by floating municipal bonds," he said and added that a bond issue was being implemented in respect of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. The other municipalities could also avail themselves of this facility, he added. The commercial division of the Consulate in Chennai, Mr Haynes said, was helping in securing FDI for various projects of this nature. "In fact our Consulate is No.1 among all US consulates in the world in extending assistance of this nature to entrepreneurs. We have created a Web site also for this purpose."
