Reliance cries foul on broadband report

Our Bureau

New Delhi , May 26

RELIANCE Infocomm has gone on record alleging that the recent broadband guidelines issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) favour the Tata group. But the regulator dismissed the allegation as "nothing exceptional".

A Reliance official said that the recommendations were loaded in favour of Direct to Home (DTH) and Very Small Aperture Terminal (VSAT) players, two sectors in which the Tata group had an active presence through Space TV (its DTH venture with Star TV) and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL).

"The open sky policy for VSAT operators, removal of throughput restrictions and allowing them to work directly with any international satellite could have security implications," he said.

The TRAI Chairman, Mr Pradip Baijal, however said: "This kind of protest is nothing exceptional. During the course of regulation, the interests of many industrial houses get affected. As a regulator, our prime concern is protecting the consumers' interest."
