Importers at Kochi port face difficulties

Our Bureau

Kochi , May 27

IMPORTERS in Kochi are forced to route their cargos covered under the Plant Quarantine (Regulation of Import into India) Order 2004 through other ports because the Plant Quarantine Office in Willingdon Island is not issuing permits for importing such items, and industry chamber has said.

This has led to `enormous difficulties' for the importers who use the Kochi port, said the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in a statement here today. "It is learnt that no such restriction is in force at the neighbouring ports of Tuticorin and Chennai," the Chamber said.

The absence of the facilities for issuing import permits at the Willingdon Island office is a real handicap for the traders and affects their competitive edge. It also adversely affects the Licensed Custom House Agents, besides loss of revenue for the Kochi port, it pointed out. The Chamber said it has taken up the issue with the Central Government authorities.
