A-I budget airline plan to be unveiled today

Mumbai , May 30

THE Union Civil Aviation Minister, Mr Praful Patel, is expected to unveil on Monday Air India's plans to start a new all-economy service.

The board of Air India, which met here on Saturday, approved a proposal to start a new service by its wholly-owned subsidiary - Air India Charters Ltd. The new all-economy service will be launched under a new brand name, which will be decided later, an airline source said. The subsidiary airline will have a low-cost structure so that it will be able to offer lower fares. Air India cannot do the same, thanks to its high-cost structure, he said.

The new service with lower fares will be launched on high-density routes. Three cities in Kerala — Thiruvanthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode - will be linked to Gulf countries through this service. Besides, the service will operate on India-Far East routes.
