TN chamber hails CMP

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has welcomed the common minimum programme (CMP) of the United Progressive Alliance at the Centre and the announcement by the Chairperson of alliance, Ms Sonia Gandhi, that the various schemes and programmes announced will be reviewed every month.

In a statement here, Mr S. Rethinavelu, Chamber President, referring to programmes pertaining to Tamil Nadu mentioned in the CMP such as the Sethu Samudhram project, installation of desalination plants along the Coromandel coast starting with Chennai to ensure drinking water supply, linking of South-bound rivers, finding a solution to the Cauvery water dispute etc., has said that these are bound to transform the State into one of the most preferred investment destination and activate trade and industrial development to a large extent.

Pointing to the miserable condition of the small scale sector he said that the proactive decisions of the new government exhibited a clear understanding of the ground realities.

He regretted that there was no mention in the CMP about legitimisation of contract labour as allowed in China. The Left parties should agree to the step as it is bound to generate additional employment opportunities, he said.

To accelerate industrial development of Madurai, the Madurai airport modernisation and expansion scheme and setting of the special economic zone at Nanguneri should be expedited, he added.
